Confidence

Mary sat down and took a breath before speaking.

“I think I understand decisions better,” she said. “At least… I understand why they feel so difficult.”

Breed Holloway nodded.

“And what makes them difficult?” he asked.

Mary didn’t hesitate.

“Not knowing if I’m right.”

Breed watched her for a moment.

“That’s where most people start,” he said. “But it’s not where confidence comes from.”

Mary frowned slightly.

“Then where does it come from?”

Breed leaned forward.

“Confidence doesn’t come from being right,” he said.
“It comes from understanding what you’re doing.”

Mary sat quietly.

“So if I understand my decisions… I won’t second-guess them as much?”

“You’ll still question them,” Breed replied. “But you won’t be shaken by them.”

Mary nodded slowly.

“That feels different.”

Breed continued.

“Most people think confidence comes after results,” he said.
“But in investing, it usually comes before.”

Mary looked at him.

“You mean I need confidence before I know if something works?”

Breed smiled slightly.

“You need enough understanding to stay with a decision long enough to find out.”

Mary exhaled.

“So confidence isn’t certainty.”

Breed shook his head.

“It’s clarity.”

He paused before adding one final thought.

“And clarity allows you to keep going… even when things feel uncertain.”

Mary sat back.

“I think I’m starting to see how this all fits together.”

Breed nodded.

“That’s where real confidence begins.”

Next week, Mary begins to recognize something that quietly influences every decision she makes:

Expectations.
