Cash
Mary looked thoughtful as she sat down.
“I think I’m starting to understand risk,” she said. “It’s not just what happens in the market… it’s how people respond to it.”
Breed Holloway nodded.
“And what helps people respond better?” he asked.
Mary hesitated.
“I’m not sure.”
Breed leaned forward slightly.
“Cash,” he said.
Mary looked surprised.
“But cash doesn’t really grow,” she replied.
“That’s not its job,” Breed said calmly.
He paused.
“Cash provides something most investors don’t think about—control.”
Mary frowned.
“Control over what?”
“Over decisions,” Breed said. “When markets become uncomfortable, investors without cash are often forced to act.”
Mary nodded slowly.
“They have to sell something.”
“Exactly,” Breed replied. “And often at the worst possible time.”
He continued.
“Cash creates space. It allows you to think clearly instead of reacting quickly.”
Mary sat back.
“So it’s not about return.”
Breed shook his head.
“It’s about flexibility.”
He looked at her carefully.
“The investor with cash has options.”
Mary smiled slightly.
“And the one without it?”
Breed returned the smile.
“Has pressure.”
Next week, Mary begins to see something that quietly shapes every investment decision:
Behavior.
