The Drawer She Couldn't Open

Mary had avoided the top drawer of her late husband's desk for nearly two years.

She wasn't afraid of what she might find.

She was afraid of what she might not.

One quiet afternoon, she finally opened it.

Inside were old warranties, family photographs, and a neatly labeled folder marked Important. As she opened it, her hands began to shake.

Investment statements.

Accounts she had never seen before.

The next afternoon, Mary spread the papers across Breed Holloway's conference table.

"I don't even know where to begin," she admitted softly.

Breed looked at the stack of statements, then back at Mary.

"Most people think investing begins with buying something," he said. "It doesn't. It begins with understanding what you already own."

Mary looked back at the papers.

For the first time, she realized that owning investments and understanding them were two very different things.

Next week: Breed helps Mary uncover the three questions every investor should ask before making any financial decision.
