The Illusion of Control
Mary arrived early for her meeting with Breed Holloway.
“I’ve been watching the financial news,” she said as she sat down. “Everyone seems to have a prediction about where the market is going.”
Breed leaned back in his chair.
“They always do,” he replied.
Mary frowned slightly.
“Some of them sound very confident.”
Breed smiled.
“Confidence is easy when you're talking about the future.”
Mary looked puzzled.
“Isn’t predicting the market part of investing?”
Breed shook his head.
“Predictions create the illusion of control,” he said. “They make people feel like the future can be managed.”
Mary thought about that.
“But the future can’t be managed,” she said slowly.
“Exactly,” Breed replied.
He paused before continuing.
“Investing isn’t about predicting what markets will do next. It’s about building a structure that can survive whatever happens.”
Mary nodded.
“So the goal isn’t to control the future.”
Breed smiled again.
“The goal,” he said quietly, “is to be prepared for it.”
Next week, Mary begins to understand something many investors overlook:
Time.
